I want to do a “like to like” conversion of existing Oracle Discoverer models into Cognos Framework Manager. Is it possible?

QUESTION: I want to do a “like to like” conversion of existing Oracle Discoverer models into Cognos Framework Manager. Is it possible? Does Cognos Framework Manager provide any options for importing the Discoverer models into Cognos directly?

ANSWER: This is an excellent question that reflects a reality that many customers face: the desire to change BI platforms while retaining some of the value of their existing investments.

The short answer is: No, Cognos does not provide any mechanism to import Discoverer models. In fact, none of the major BI platform vendors provide facilities to help customers migrate from other BI platforms, although Oracle does offer a Discoverer to OBI EE conversion assistant.

However, if your End User Layer (EUL, which is Discoverer’s name for its semantic model) was created by Noetix Generator for Oracle Discoverer, you’re in luck. We have an equivalent product, Noetix Generator for IBM Cognos, which will generate Framework Manager Packages. Though it doesn’t do conversion, it will create packages with equivalent capabilities to the business areas it creates in the EUL.

Aside from that, unfortunately, I think you’re stuck with the brute force method of going into Framework Manager to start building things.

Submit a question to Noetix and check back for the answer in an upcoming blog post!
